SHAW RALLIES LATE TO EDGE ECSU VIKINGS 61-58

ECSU 0-16 from Downtown in Three Point Loss to Shaw Bears

RALEIGH, NC - Brandon Simms nailed a three-pointer with 1:47 remaining to lift the Shaw University Bears past Elizabeth City State University 61-58 Saturday night at Spaulding Gymnasium.

The Vikings led the entire second half and with 4:43 left held an 8-point advantage 53-45. From that point on the Bears would close the game out on a 16-5 run to complete the come from behind victory. In the final two minutes the Bears (8-6, CIAA 6-2) secured two key offensive rebounds which assisted in their rally; The first came off a Michael Smith put-back after a miss by Adrian Bascom which made the score 57-55 in favor of ECSU. Smith was fouled in the process and went to the free throw line to complete the possible three-point play. He misfired on the free throw however Bascom corralled the offensive board which set the stage for Simms go-ahead three-pointer.

Eric Pitts was the lone Bear in double figures with 10 points. Marquie Cooke led all scorers with 16 points while Paul Goldsmith notched another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

ECSU Wins Second Consecutive Game in Overtime

RALEIGH, NC- Kenyatta Gill scored a game and career high 22 points as Elizabeth City State University knocked off the #23 ranked Shaw University Lady Bears 66-64 in overtime Saturday evening in Spaulding Gymnasium.

The win is the second for the Lady Vikings over a ranked team this season as they topped Johnson C. Smith on January 9th when they were ranked in the top 25. It also represents ECSU’s first win over Shaw University since the 2006-07 season.

In the extra period Tanisha McGaughey drained a 3-pointer with 9 seconds remaining to put the Lady Bears up 64-63. On the Lady Vikings’ ensuing possession Gill was fouled and sent to the line where she sank two free throws giving ECSU the lead for good. Shaquella Johnson stole the Shaw inbounds pass and was then fouled where she sank one of two free throws for the final point spread.

Joyce Freeman collected her second double-double of the season and in as many games with 12 points and 12 boards while Kearah Jefferys chipped in with 10 points off the bench.

    CURATOR EMERITUS AT SMITHSONIAN'S NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY WILL BE GUEST SPEAKER FOR MARCH LECTURE AND LUNCHEON
    SPONSORED BY THE GUILD OF MUSEUM FRIENDS

    On Thursday, March 4, 2010, Edith P. Mayo, Curator Emeritus in Political History at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History, will be the guest speaker for The Guild of Museum Friends' monthly meeting. The public is invited to attend this special event, which is a lecture and luncheon. This is Ms. Mayo’s second program for The Guild of Museum Friends.

    Ms. Mayo will discuss "Little Known Presidential Families—What’s Their Story?" The lecture and luncheon will take place at 10:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church, located at 201 South Road Street in Elizabeth City. Tickets are $15 and seating is limited to 100 people.     A graduate of George Washington University, Ms. Mayo has curated major exhibitions on political history, voting rights, and women's history including "The Right To Vote" (1972), a history of voting rights in the United States; "We The People" (1975), on the American people and their government; "We'll Never Turn Back" (1980), an exhibition on Civil Rights; "We The People: Winning The Vote" (1987), an exploration of formal and informal constitutional process which evolved over 200 years of the nation's history; and "From Parlor to Politics: Women and Reform in America, 1890-1925" (1990), on women's reform and politics at the turn of the 20th century. She also reconceptualized the Smithsonian's famous First Ladies exhibition, "First Ladies: Political Role and Public Image" (1992).

    As a consultant, Ms. Mayo curated "Rights for Women" (1998), a major exhibition on women's suffrage, for the World Financial Center in New York, which celebrated the 150th anniversary of the U. S. women's rights movement. Her 1999 exhibition, "The Pleasure of Your Company," for the Museum of Old Salem in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, explored the political impact of the First Lady's social role. In 2002, Ms. Mayo completed a major traveling exhibition on women business entrepreneurs entitled, "Enterprising Women," for the Radcliffe Institute of Harvard University.

    A popular lecturer on women's history and the First Ladies, Ms. Mayo serves as a Distinguished Lecturer for the Organization of American Historians. She has written articles on women's history, the First Ladies, museum curatorship and collecting, as well as two books, Presidential Families and The Smithsonian's Book of First Ladies: Their Lives, Times, and Issues.

    ECSU Albemarle Symphony Orchestra holds concert on January 24

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- The ECSU Albemarle Symphony Orchestra will hold its fall concert at 3:00 pm on January 24 at the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center. The concert is free.

    Concert selections will include works by Alfred Reed, one of America's most prolific and frequently performed composers. Reed has more than 200 published works for concert band, wind ensemble, orchestra, chorus, and chamber ensemble. The orchestra will also perform works by Camille Saint-Saens, a French composer. Saints-Saens was co-founder of the Société Nationale de Musique, and composer of over 300 musical works, including symphonic poems such as “Danse Macabre” and operas such as "Samson et Dalila." Also scheduled are works by pianist Gustav Holst, a British composer known for his choral part-songs, song cycles, operas and orchestral pieces such as "The Planets."     The ECSU Office of Student Life announces a change in the route of the Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative march. The press release below replaces the press release distributed on January 8, 2010.

    Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative march held January 18

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ---- The Office of Student Life at Elizabeth City State University will hold the annual Martin Luther King Jr. commemorative march at 9:30 am on January 18. Participants will march from the G. R. Little Library on campus to City Hall, 306 East Colonial Avenue in Elizabeth City. Mr. Linwood Williams, superintendent of the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Public Schools, is the speaker for the program at City Hall. The general public, church groups, social and civic clubs are welcome to participate in the march.

    ECSU Survives Late Blue Bear Run to Earn Nine Point Victory

    ELIZABETH CITY, NC - Paul Goldsmith score 19 points and grabbed 19 rebounds as Elizabeth City State held on to defeat Livingstone College 79-70 Monday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

    After trailing ECSU 37-30 at the half Virgil Taylor’s jumper at the 11:30 mark capped a 10-0 Blue Bear run which gave them a 45-44 advantage, their first lead since early in the first half. The lead changed six more times over the next four minutes until the Vikings went on an 18-8 run to push the lead to double digits, 70-59 with 1:18 to play.

    The Vikings forced 21 Blue Bear turnovers which were converted into 23 points for ECSU. Angelo Sharpless collected his third consecutive game in double figures with 13 points while Quintin Spady, Marquie Cooke and B.J. Williams each chipped in 10 points apiece. Trent Bivens rounded out the double figure scorers with 11 points.

    Aaron Caruthers and Greg Henry each had 19 points for the Blue Bears (7-4, CIAA 5-2).

    ECSU Wins See-Saw Affair; Captures Season Series Over Lady Blue Bears

    ELIZABETH CITY, NC - The Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings outscored Livingstone College 10-5 in overtime to earn a 66-61 victory Monday night at the RL Vaughan Center.

    Kearah Jefferys’ jumper (her first basket of the game) with 9 seconds remaining forced the extra session. Once the extra five minutes commenced neither team managed to score until Montiya Harrison put LC ahead with 2:36 left in the game. On the Lady Vikings’ ensuing possession Crystal Smith was fouled as she scored a layup and would connect on the free throw to give ECSU the lead for good 59-58. Shaquella Johnson and Kearah Jefferys scored on back-to-back layups to give ECSU some cushion while the Lady Blue Bears only managed a Harrison 3-pointer as time expired.

    The game was close throughout with 15 ties and 15 lead changes. ECSU outrebounded Livingstone (4-8, CIAA 2-5) 57-41.

    Shaquella Johnson led ECSU with a team high 16 points while Joyce Freeman tallied a double-double of 14 points and 10 rebounds.

    The Lady Vikings (8-4, CIAA 4-4) will return to action at Shaw University on Saturday, January 16 at Spaulding Gymnasium in Raleigh, NC. Game time is scheduled for 5:30pm. For more information on ECSU Athletics, visit www.ecsuvikings.com.
